Following our recent call to action, I want to thank everyone who took the time to contact their senators.

Your engagement ensured that this issue was heard across Nebraska. This was not simply a piece of legislation—it became a meaningful conversation about how our state recognizes the role of Public Works employees in emergency response.

I also want to recognize and thank the twenty-three senators who voted to override the veto on LB 1256. Your support reflects an understanding of the essential work being performed every day to keep our communities safe and functioning.

While the override effort did not succeed, the outcome does not change the reality on the ground.

Public Works employees will continue to respond during emergencies. They will continue to protect critical infrastructure, clear roadways, and ensure access for police, fire, and emergency medical services. That responsibility does not begin or end with a vote.

Concerns were raised regarding the projected fiscal impact of the bill. Those concerns deserve to be addressed thoroughly and transparently. Moving forward, we are committed to engaging in that process, providing data, sharing real-world examples, and ensuring that the discussion reflects both cost considerations and the necessity of preparedness.

This issue remains important, and the conversation will continue.

AFSCME Local 251 will remain engaged with state leadership to ensure that the role of Public Works employees in emergency response is fully understood and appropriately recognized.

We appreciate the continued support of our members and partners, and we will keep working toward a solution that reflects the realities faced by communities across Nebraska.
