AFSCME Local 251, Omaha’s Largest Civilian Bargaining Unit, Endorses Mayor Jean Stothert for Re-Election
AFSCME Local 251 proudly announces its official endorsement of Mayor Jean Stothert for re-election as Mayor of the City of Omaha. The decision was made following a recent meeting between union leadership, Mayor Stothert, and Chief of Staff Thomas Warren.
During the discussion, union leaders raised critical concerns regarding employee safety, conditions at the police impound lot, infrastructure support, police department parking, and operational issues within the Parks Department. The Mayor committed to addressing these concerns and agreed to hold quarterly meetings with union leadership to ensure open, consistent communication.
“Mayor Stothert has demonstrated a willingness to listen, to meet directly with our union, and to work together on behalf of the city’s workforce,” said Tony Burkhalter, President of Nebraska Public Employees AFSCME Local 251. “We believe her continued leadership will help advance the rights and protections of working people in Omaha.”
Since 2018, AFSCME Local 251 and the City of Omaha have made significant progress in improving safety, wages, and benefits for public employees. As the largest civilian bargaining unit in the city, Local 251 sees this endorsement as part of a broader strategy to ensure that the voices of city workers remain at the forefront of Omaha’s future.
“Our members maintain Omaha’s parks, plow its streets, repair infrastructure, and keep public buildings safe and functional,” Burkhalter added. “Their work is essential, and they deserve leadership that respects and supports them.”
AFSCME Local 251 looks forward to continued collaboration with Mayor Stothert and her administration.
